Light-painting photographer Eric Pare explored the capabilities of a human 3D scanner by using it to capture his new bag. My multi-camera rig wasn’t designed to scan objects. It was built to scan humans. Humans move, breathe, blink, and refuse to float mid-air. To capture them properly in 3D, everything needs to happen in a fraction of a second. But can we scan objects with it? Yes. And in this video, I explain when it actually makes sense to do so. We break down two specific use cases where a human-scale photogrammetry rig outperforms traditional object scanning: high-volume production and capturing objects in motion. From scanning hundreds of items in a single day to freezing a falling object from every angle at once, this is where “overkill” becomes the right tool.
